Ernakulam refers to the eastern, mainland portion of the city of Kochi in central Kerala. The city is the most urban part of Kochi and has lent its name to the Ernakulam district. Ernakulam , the financial capital of Kerala, has derived its name from a very famous temple of Lord Shiva called the Ernakulathappan Temple. It is also said that the word Ernakulam was drawn from Malayalam words 'Ere naal Kulam', which mean 'Pond for a long time'. Cochin is the previous anglicized name of Kochi city. At present Ernakulam is the district which contain Kochi/Cochin city. Native people frequently use both names “Ernakulam and Kochi" for the city. The district has a moderate climate, and mostly falls within the Malabar Coast moist forests eco region, while the highlands are part of the South Western Ghats moist deciduous forests eco region. It is an important commercial and residential area of the state of Kerala. The Kerala High Court is situated in Ernakulam. Cochin international airport is located in northern part of the district at Nedumbassery. Proximity to an international airport, well connected road, railway & waterways, add to the geographical comfort in reaching the city. Ernakulam occupies an important place among the districts of Kerala in the field of literacy and educational standards.
The most visited tourist spots in Ernakulam District are Marine Drive, Bolghatty Palace, Willington Island, Jewish Synagogue, Hill Palace Museum, Kodanad Elephant Kraal, Wonderla Amusement Park, Lulu Shopping Mall, Malayatoor Church, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, Bhoothatankettu Dam, etc. The Winter Season in Kochi begins from November and lasts till the month of February. The ambient temperature hovers between 26 to 32°C, wherein ordinary light clothing will suffice. This season is considered to be the best time to visit Kochi.
